Why Did I Become an Attorney?

Over the years, friends have asked me about when and why I decided to become an attorney?

I first wanted to become a lawyer when I was in 6th grade. I'm not sure why? My family didn't know any lawyers. I believe I thought it would be interesting work and my job would not be replaced by a computer. Thanks to gifts from God, my parents, my teachers, partial scholarships, and my own hard work, I have been able to achieve this dream.

I attended Syracuse University to achieve my undergraduate and law degrees. I chose Syracuse because it was the only college in New York State that offered a "combination" program, ie., an opportunity to complete my education in six years rather than seven years. Basically, I was allowed to "skip" my 4th year as an undergraduate and credits for courses in my first year of law school counted twice, ie., for my 4th year as an undergraduate and my first year in law school. I was thus able to save one year of college expenses and to begin my working career one year early.

My first employment after law school, at age 23, was with the Conboy law firm in Watertown in 1974. Conboy purchased a law business from Attorney Miller F. Moran in Carthage in 1981. My family and I moved to Carthage in 1983, as I believed (and still believe) that if reasonably possible, you should live in and support the community in which you work.

I worked with Conboy for more than 47 years. I was the managing partner for more than 22 years, ie., until March 5, 2020. We accomplished many good things as "the Conboy family".

I retired, but not for long. Conboy had decided to close its office in Carthage. Shortly after the Carthage Conboy office closed, I opened my own office...in Carthage.

I take great pride in my roots as a Watertown "Northsider" and the fact that my parents graduated high school in Copenhagen.

Having lived and worked in Carthage and being part of our community for many years, I am privileged to be "Here to Help"!
